Keep Your Spa Pool Healthy & Inviting
Owning a spa pool is one of life’s great pleasures. A warm soak under the stars can wash away the stress of the day—until cloudy water or a green tinge suddenly appears. Good news: keeping your spa crystal-clear doesn’t need to be complicated. With a few easy habits and the right attention to water balance and filtration, your spa can stay pristine all year.
Why Cleaning Matters
Clean, balanced water isn’t just about looking good—it’s about protecting your health and your investment. Warm water creates the perfect environment for algae, bacteria, and biofilm if maintenance slips.
Regular cleaning keeps your jets, pumps, and heater running smoothly, extends equipment life, and ensures every soak is safe and hygienic.
Your Weekly Checklist
Set aside a few minutes each week for basic maintenance:
- Test water balance. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and sanitizer levels within safe limits.
- Top-up chlorine or bromine as needed to keep bacteria in check.
- Rinse the filter thoroughly under warm water. This removes trapped oils, dirt, and leaves.
- Wipe the shell and waterline with a soft cloth—avoid harsh cleaners that create foam.
- Run the jets for five minutes to circulate chemicals evenly.
Consistency here prevents most cloudy-water and heating issues before they start.
Monthly Deep Clean
Once a month, go beyond surface cleaning:
- Remove filter cartridges and soak them overnight in a Focus Filter Cleaner and Degreaser or a similar spa-grade solution.
- Rinse thoroughly and let them air-dry before reinstalling.
- Polish the acrylic shell using a non-abrasive spa cleaner to remove any film or residue.
The better you look after your filter, the better it can look after your spa water.
Quarterly Drain & Refill
Every three to four months, give your spa a reset:
- Drain completely. Use a submersible pump or the built-in drain outlet.
- Clean jets and footwell while empty; a soft brush helps dislodge biofilm.
- Inspect and clean filters again. If your filter is more than two years old, it’s time to replace it.
- Refill with fresh water and rebalance chemicals before heating.
A full refill clears built-up minerals, oils, and body products that regular sanitation can’t remove.
Seasonal Care for New Zealand Conditions
Summer ☀️ – Monitor evaporation and top up water regularly. Use the cover to keep out dust and debris.
Autumn 🍂 – Falling leaves clog filters quickly; rinse them twice weekly.
Winter ❄️ – Run the spa weekly to prevent freezing and maintain circulation.
Spring 🌸 – Give your spa a thorough clean before the season of heavy use begins.
Our variable NZ climate can alter water balance, so test more often when temperatures fluctuate.
Filtration — the Heart of a Clean Spa
Your filter is the silent workhorse that keeps water clear.
A dirty or clogged filter restricts flow, forces the heater and pump to work harder, and can even trigger heating faults.
Always:
- Rinse filters weekly with clean water.
- Soak them in Focus Filter Cleaner and Degreaser every time you change the water.
- Replace filters every 18–24 months depending on use.
Many spa-heating issues trace back to poor filter maintenance—regular cleaning prevents costly repairs.
Spotting Trouble Early
If you notice:
- Cloudy or green water: likely algae or unbalanced chemicals—shock-dose with sanitizer and clean filters.
- Strong chemical odour: indicates high chloramine levels—drain and refill.
- Reduced jet pressure: check and clean the filter first; nine times out of ten it’s the culprit.
Covers, Accessories & Prevention
Keep the spa cover on whenever you’re not soaking—it traps heat, blocks debris, and prevents evaporation.
Encourage users to shower before entering to remove oils and cosmetics.
Avoid adding bubble baths or household soaps; they foam and clog filters.
Relax, Knowing It’s Looked After
A sparkling spa is the result of small, regular habits. Keep the water balanced, the filter clean, and the jets running freely, and your spa will thank you with years of trouble-free performance.
